The Jokers – The Long Ago World of 1950′s Teens

A scene so far away that comic books were known to be a prime cause of crime and slackery.

Smoking! Putting his feet up on the seat! Jail or the army!

Gone to where the old dreams and nightmares go.

By the time I saw the book, it was maybe 1964/5 and these photos from maybe 1957/58 were already history. At the army physical these were the guys who wanted to jump you for bringing doctor’s notes and trying not to get drafted.

These kids – tough unto death and wierdly innocent – without words for their alienation – are slumped not on bar stools but on soda fountain twirlies.

Very cool! I’d say what a great nostalgia trip, except I’ve no business getting nostalgic for the 50s :) . Still, I love the sense these shots bring across that things were different yet the same (although, as you point out, what might have been shocking behavior then is pretty run-of-the-mill today — most of these people remind me of kids I went to college with).
